Check out my blog on Canada<\/a>, Newfoundland and life on Fogo Island. First I was on a road trip through Newfoundland to get a feel for \"The Rock\". That's what some Newfoundlanders call their vast, wild island. The First Nation people call it Ktaqmkuk. On September 15 I started a research residency with Fogo Island Arts<\/strong><\/a> on Fogo, an island off the northern coast of Newfoundland. I'm meeting fantastic people, hiking with a geologist across the island, learning about traditional gardening, doing studio visits with local artists, celebrating the 90th birthday of a fisherman, an anthropologist explained the scarcity of fish, a pastor from Zimbabwe the taste of moose meat. I'm collecting all these lively conversations, the rich histories. And in the spirit of Joni Mitchell<\/strong>Canadian singer-songwriter legend and one of my favorite artists, I'll try to draw mental maps of my experiences and encounters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
